Shenedehowa High makes a Lip Dub

There are few things that are more fun than making a lip dub. Last year, I visited a school in Massachusetts where students made a lip dub and it looked like so much fun that I came back and convinced the newsroom to make one. I knew I wanted my Live @ 5:30 Bob Kovachick to help start things off. I then found the music, held a rehearsal and we then shot it. It was so much fun and we got more than 30,000 hits. Now students at Shenendehowa High School have created a lip dub and I wanted you to take part in the fun. Enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCUhXbMqEjc&feature=youtu.be

Top teachers---Great fun going to talk to them

What a GREAT time photographer Lou S. and I had today at Lisha Kill Middle School. The teacher is John Meurs. He teaches Social Studies and he is the kind of teacher I wish I had when I was in school. He challenges the kids, motivates them. It was just a great time and I enjoyed being a student again!!!!!!!! Thanks Mr. M. Thanks kids for having us. Elaine

Who is advocating for kids?

The past year has been quite a year in education in our area. And, this year is starting off to be just as busy. The governor in his State of the State wants to appoint a bipartisan education commission to work with law makers to recommend reforms in education, I just spent the morning going over some of this year's Top Teacher nominations-setting up times to go to schools to interview them, we will once again have our teacher forum this year and are making plans for that, and I'm setting up my weekly education stories.

Lots going on-and this year I hope to hear that more parents are doing what the governor, lawmakers, teachers and administrators are doing and that's getting involved in their kid's education.

That seems to be one of the 'big' concerns of administrators-- not enough parents are involved in their kid's education. It reminds me of a couple of occasions when I have written stories on students who are excelling academically or in the community and when I arrived at the site for the story the parents are there and sometimes they proceed to tell the photog what to shoot, tell me what questions to ask and how the story should be written. It makes for an interesting ride back to the newsroom-were they pushy or advocating?

On the flip side, I get calls from parents sometimes complaining about their school district. How can a kid be failing without the parent knowing it- were they helping with homework, emailing the teacher before a problem occurs, attending parent teacher conferences/ No-not so much.. This year is a new year and a perfect opportunity to start fresh, get excited, get involved--because others are already making plans for your child.

Bullying-Will we ever stop it?

With all the attention on bullying it still remains a big problem. Almost every other week, I get an email from a student or parent saying they or their child is a victim of bullying. I got one this week from the friend of a local high school student. The victim- traumatized-had not been to school in two days. What does it take to stop bullying? At Columbia High this week there's been a two-day workshop for students and staff on how to recognize and prevent bullying nevertheless I am now preparing to do yet another story on this issue. This involves a different girl who I just found out was being bullied. There's something that we are missing with this issue. We've got to get a handle on why our kids feel its ok for them to have power over another child. I'm open to hear your suggestions-what do you think? Elaine

Battles in Education continue to emerge

Is education the easy target? You have to ask yourself that question when you think about all the areas that need to be streamlined. We talk about Social Security needing to be cut, the military budget needing to be cut, but those cuts aren't occurring. They are occurring in education. The newsroom has been buzzing with people emailing and telling their story about possibly losing their job in education in order to balance their district's budget. School programs are also on the chopping block and teachers are still expected to do more. What is the mental toll- - the morale at a school in the wake of all the talk about cutting budgets and how does that eventually impact the student? It's something to think about.
